Seeds labeled Bean are some of the oldest seeds in collection and it is with these seeds that Foster Seed Partnerships begin. I know that my seed conditions have not been cave like, yet the seeds have surprised me with the magic that continues to ignite some lfe.
When seeds are very old, they have used up most of what was a good start for the seedlings, so extra organic nutrients will need to be on hand. How much? I don't know; maybe micro feedings of your organic food with your eye on the plant. I like a weak seaweed or fish emulsion; I hear that rabbit manure tea is very good.
I suggest that Foster Seed Partners start their seed in grow containers to observe the vitality of the seeds. Soak overnight, plant, water well. Do not let soil dry out and do not have your soil sopping wet. Mist well the surface, but water from the bottom is great for all new seedlings.
Bean sprouts and bean plants are loved by many creatures so need protecting. I have found that when doing small plantings, making circles of only five feet diameter, with delicious foods of any type, including fruit tree babies is a deterant to deer. I visited Sobremesa Farm where they create arched grow areas for climbing beans. R. Mills is creating an enclosed arched grow area to safely contain his bean plantings and his Honeyberry (long life) bushes.
Once the harvest has occured, I will update with information about the old seed viability and life of plants grown.
